My condolences go out to the Power family during this time of such a great loss. Thank you John for being so good to me when I was a young fellow. From driving me to work day in and day out and letting me stay in you home as well as making me laugh. Really sad to hear this news about your father Brenda and Mike. My thoughts are with you during this time of sadness.

Dear Brenda, Michael, Jeff and Erin:
When we were very small in St. Joseph's, we knew we had this incredibly funny and generous uncle, who would descend on us at a moment's notice , with your cute and attractive young mother, Aunt Mary, and brighten our young lives with his ebullient and fun-loving ways. Your Dad loved children, and among his many gifts, that one is one we instinctively responded to. Mom and Dad delighted in his presence; he could make Mom laugh to almost collapse, and along with the ghost stories, cards and games, those were times to remember in lamplight-dotted, gravel-paved St. Joseph's of our early childhood. Later, when he moved to Ontario for some years, he would write letters not only to Mom (and she forever remarked his most beautiful penmanship!), but to us as well, and send photos of you two as babies, along with all manner of foolishness he was apt to get up to. How we relished those envelopes and epistles and jokes and records of daily living in in the bright lights of a big city so far away! Uncle John was also a beautiful singer, and deep thinker , with a strong faith in God. He was well remembered for his generous heart and helping others, as the St. Edwards' deacon noted today in the beautiful tribute during his funeral service. Consider yourself blessed to have had him in your lives. Go well, Uncle John.

To Brenda, Michael, Jeff and Erin: At this very sad time, I know that messages of good memories of your loved one from family and friends are a source of solace. He was indeed our loved one as well. How we looked forward to your Mom and Dad bringing the family in to spend time with us around the Bay. It was a time of mirth and laughter as he regaled us with his endless jokes and anecdotes. He loved St. Joseph's since he lived there for a number of his teenage years. Mom throroughly enjoyed her little get-aways in the Summer with Mary, your Mom, over in Daniel's Cove. She spoke very fondly of your grandmother, Mrs Kelly, who was such a loved and contributing part of the family. I remember a few times we went to visit your parents at the cottage in Placentia and Uncle John upon seeing us arrive, would kneel down and kiss the ground. Such was his sense of humor. It was heart warming that he and Mom got to spend an extended period of time together at Hillcrest Estates during the last year of her life. Many memories and much laughter. Rest in peace, Uncle John.

I remember clearly the day I coaxed Uncle John to loan me this to copy. It was one of his favourite photos , himself as a young lad and radio operator in Greenland. I had to promise faithfully to return it. Well, I did then, and I do now, for you to share , along with all your great memories up there. Joyful journey, uncle.

Ghost stories recounted with Mike on one side of the bed and me on the other as we tried, often in vain, to get to sleep. Nuns walking across ponds, apparitions arising from the fog, any number of ghoulies, goblins and fairies out and about to keep young boys from getting too careless and cocky. Uncle John was a great story teller and the centre of attention when he regaled those around. And boy could he yodel, the best I've ever heard, bar none. We all loved Uncle John and Aunt Mary, whose patience and grace was the perfect companion for his antics. Brenda and Mike, your Dad will be missed by all who knew him, especially me. But, we can all take solace that he is now getting laughs from my Mom and all his family and friends who have gone before. We are saddened by his absence, but his spirit and humour lives within. RIP Uncle John.
