It is with heartfelt sadness that we bid farewell to a great man; a man affectionately dubbed, Dick’s Phil. When I first met Phil, I was no more than 10 years old and the truth be known he seemed much older then, than he actually was, but he never seemed to age from that day forward. He was among other things a great dozer operator and given his love for horses, when he took a break from bulldozing, he was always more than willing to check out the horses. Arriving in Point Lance for the annual Garden Party was quite the adventure, and heading to the riding ring run by none other than Phil was comforting. He would holler like no one else, and invite us all to take the horse for a spin! On one occasion, my wonderful husband Martin was assisting Phil, which is probably why we rode all day! Phil was adamant that “ Sandra Tobin” was well used to riding horses and needed no help…what were you thinking Phil, I was dying for Martin’s assistance!!!! As young university students stressed with assignments and tests, it was refreshing to head to Point Lance on the weekend and pick up Phil as we headed to the Shamrock, Dicks, or the Star…whatever seemed most appealing. We must have been nuts, but there is no denying they were great times. We would be belting out every tune from A is for Alan…to Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train, and Phil was happy Jack just to sip on a few beer and have a grand time. When Kris Kristofferson coined Sunday morning coming down he had not met Phil…really if you knew Phil you know he would have been a shoe in with Waylon, Willie, and the boys…and he would have given Clint Eastwood a run for his money too…along with the Man from Snowy River. No matter where we travel there are few memories that will ever beat being called by Phil on a Sunday morning. The all too familiar, “Hey Mart…” brings tears to my eyes tonight as I pen a tribute to a kind, caring, compassionate, loving man , who would give you the shirt off his back! When the boys were little, we were out like lights at Hannah and Aloysius’ house on a Sunday morning…being on BC time, it was about 4:30am in our minds, and Phil came down across the meadow with the mare in tow, calling the boys to go for a ride…of course they were up in a flash, and did not need too much convincing to leave the city lights behind to follow Phil to the beach on the mare’s back…and I have precious photos so they too can always know that good people are not just in fairytales. Phil, we cannot imagine Point Lance without you. We will always treasure your phone calls, and come Valentine’s Day we will miss your card. Aloysius, no one could ruin your Saturday night movie like me saying I saw it before and Phil coming in on his way home from Dinny’s….say no more!!!! May you all find comfort in the memories you have of Dick’s Phil. I am glad Martin is there with the boys to give Phil the send off he always imagined. Mrs. Tessie, take care and God Bless and we will chat soon. Love, Sandra, Jonathan, and Clayton Careen. Abbotsford, British Columbia.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Phil's passing.I was unaware that he was sick again. I will remember him always as a quiet, kind & gentle person. He had a special bond with my mother(Mrs.Nellie,as he called her).Whenever I'd visit her gravesite he'd see me & come up.Knowing how lonely I was ,he always took the time to comfort me & talk of Mom fondly..Each day he would take a walk to her gravesite to make sure all was in order. I will miss him greatly. I am sure the Good Lord has already welcomed him into His arms and he rests in a beautiful & well-deserved peace. My condolences to his family and especially to Mrs Tessie who has weathered several deaths in her family but somehow manages to keep going. Please know I'm thinking of you all & will be there in spirit at Phil's funeral mass and accompanying you to bring him to the "Little Barren" for his final resting. I'm still in Calgary with my children but will be out to see you over the summer.May the Good Lord hold & comfort you in your sorrow.

To all of the Careen family, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We were blessed to have known Phil. We have fond memories of him as children and young adults. We have heard lots of, "Dick's Phil" stories from our parents, Harold and Joan Tobin, and Monica and Al Nash. No matter who or what the story always ends with how great a person Phil was. We know that Martin, Sandra, Jonathan, and Clayton will really miss chatting with Phil, and getting their annual Valentines from him. Phil will be missed. Love to all especially to Mrs. Tessie.

To the Careen family: Our sincere condolences to all of you at this difficult time. We had the pleasure of having Phil work with us in Argentia. He was a terrific person to work with and always had a story for us each morning. He was the first one there every morning even though he was the one who had the longer drive. He was very proud of his work. We remember Phil as a kind, warm-hearted, very thoughtful man. On occasion he'd show up with his packages, sometimes fish, sometimes berries. He never forgot about us and we never forgot about him. Phil always spoke very highly of his family and all the people in the community of Point Lance, especially Wanda Careen's little Angel as he called her. He will certainly be missed by us all. Take Care & God Bless. Tim & Erin Hickey

To the Careen family, sorry we could not be with you at such a difficult time. It's even harder to believe when we are so far away from home. We have not seen Phil since he got really sick, but we always asked about him when we called home. To not see Phil coming out the lane swinging his arms, or driving down the road before the shop opened in the evening, looking in, is hard to think about. He was always so full of life, and loved children so much. How much candy did he buy for Braedan and Haileigh? But at least now, Phil is finally at peace and he is free from pain. He fought a tough battle but he always stayed so strong. I'm sure if he sees Poppy (Gerad) in heaven they'll have a beer together and look down at the crowd in the shed. Take care and please know we are thinking of you and praying for you. See you the summer!
