To: Margie, Kaitlyn, Marcus and extended family & friends.
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Hammer's passing. It brought me back to our school days that were filled with hall dances, softball games and just hanging out at Herb Murray's snack bar where Hammer and his buddies played a lot of pool. I remember Hammer was not a big talker but he had a great sense of humor and was very funny with a mischievous laugh. Margie, please know that old friends of Hammer and school mates are remembering him and share in your sadness.
RIP Hammer

Dear Margie, and all of the O’Reilly and Spurvey Families,
We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of Hammer (Michael) O’Reilly, and we offer our sincere condolences for your loss. We pray that all of the wonderful memories that you have of Michael will help you get through this most difficult time of sorrow, and bring smiles to your faces. I, Terry, have many fond memories of Hammer growing up in Fox Harbour, especially with his passion for softball and street hockey. I remember all of the great times that we, the Point and the North Side of Fox Harbour, had playing street hockey against Hammer and the Pittmans, Davis’s, Foleys, Culletons, and so on, from the ‘Other Side’ of Fox Harbour for “Fox Harbour Street Hockey Supremacy”. Usually we learned to lose gracefully to Hammer and the ‘Other Side’, but it was this kind of fun, but intense, rivalry which helped develop camaraderie, and make Fox Harbour the softball powerhouse of Newfoundland (and Canada) in the 1970’s!! Hammer was a true gentleman, who also enjoyed making people laugh. Hammer is only 5 months younger than me!! He definitely died too young, but during his stay on this earth, he touched the lives of everyone he met in a positive way. And this is most evident by the number of people from all walks of life who have extended their condolences to his family. We are proud to have known Hammer. Rest in Peace our friend.
Sincerely,
Terry, May, and Ian King

Dear Margie, Kaitlyn, Marcus and all of Michael's beloved family members, We extend deep sympathy to you on the death of Michael who was such a strong, kind, loving and gentle man. We know that he has suffered much and is now at peace. From his earliest years, Michael was like a member of our family. Many hockey pucks and softballs were hit and thrown inside and outside our home, powerful symbols of his friendship with Bill and all the boys. Mary Ellen was his babysitter. We all loved his mother Carmel who was a most gentle and loving woman. We grieved the deaths of his parents far too young. Now we grieve with all of you Michael's death, again far too young. May you be comforted by the memory of his love for all of you, his passion for softball and his Boston Bruins, his incredible work ethic, his spotless home and grounds, and his gentle presence to all he met. We know that he is now chatting with our sister Margie, catching up on all the sports teams in heaven! May God bring Michael to eternal rest and peace. May all of you be blessed with the legacy of Michael's goodness. With deepest sympathy, Sister Elizabeth for all the Davis Family

Margie, Kaitlyn, Marcus & the O’Reilly and Spurvey families. Harry and I knew he was very ill but it still comes as very sad news to hear of Hammer’s passing. I found myself recalling so many childhood memories across the brook. I can still hear him commentating as Bob Cole while he was stick handling the ball on the road. I can hear Mrs. Carmel singing out to him and the boys to get in the house just before dark. How much hide and go seek (“caught in the bumper”) did we play and of course Lone Ranger with the handmade wooden guns. Most times I was the only girl playing and they would “shoot” me but I never would fall because I wanted to keep playing. Oh such fond young memories! I know there will be many stories recalled this week as you celebrate his wonderful life.
Thoughts and prayers going your way. RIP Hammer, your strength and courage sure has been inspiring! God Bless!
