Power, Josephine (Jose) - Passed peacefully away in Placentia on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the age of 95 years after a long life well-lived. Mom was born on November 6, 1918 in Long Harbour to Thomas and Elizabeth Murray. Leaving to mourn with sad hearts and loving memories are her children: Maureen Gillespie (John), Betty Dutil (Guy), Rose Huddy (Jim), Paula Power (Ed O'Brien), David (Laura), Peter (Jen) and Joanne Power (Alex Fraser), sixteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren (plus one on the way). She also leaves to mourn her sister Madeline Whalen, her brother Tom Murray (Laura), two sisters in laws Helen Bruce and Stella Murray, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Peter , her son Bob and members of the Murray and Power families. Mom took great pride in her family and well she should, having raised her children on her own for many years while Dad was sick and after he died. To all her grandchildren she was an amazing Nanny who told lots of stories, baked Nanny bread and kept them supplied with knitted or crocheted hats, mitts, sweaters and afghans, a tradition she continued with her great-grandchildren until a week before her death. A visit home always included a game of cards, TV bingo and a jigs dinner. She lived life on her own terms but always with a sense of humour regardless of what life dealt her. Her sharp mind and her ability to adapt to change impressed all who knew her. Her legacy of selfless love, determination and strength will live on in those she touched. As a resident of Placentia for sixty-eight years, she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Star of the Sea Association, and in earlier years was a lay reader at Mass and worked with both the Girl Guide Association and the Hospital Auxiliary. A sincere thank-you to Maureen Neville, her neighbour and friend, and to her care givers, Betty O'Reilly and Mary Traverse for helping her spend her last five months at home where she wanted to be. Visitations will be at Coombs Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday from 2 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday May 3, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, Placentia . Cremation will follow . Inurnment to take place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Placentia...
