I write this thanking everyone for your very kind words.Oh the stories i could tell it was just the two of us in Ship Cove Tim was probaly lucky lol he was to young but he was protected. This past 15 months have been the hardest but yet the most learning also, of the hard facts of life.Him and i were closer then most brothers could be plus the wildest and to the extreme our little joke was Go BIG OR GO HOME.,We always dreamed outside the box i guess we were lucky that way .The past year I have lost #1 Eddy # 2 lost a so called best friend that showed his true colors at the worse time of my life #3 was taught to look out for number one by a snake but my twist on this is look out for number 1 YES ( BUT DO NOT USE PEOPLE TO DO SO}#4i have met the best people on earth this year also#5 My big brother showed me this year there is a GOD which one i do not know humans have faught over religion since Man invented it and twisted it so people would have a fear of GOD.Dont fear your GOD or the HIGHER POWER .Just make sure you can always look at your refection that person dont lie that person is number one .

Seeing Eddy's picture last night brought back a flood of memories from our high school years. I met Eddy, what would be 30 years ago this September, in Grade 7 at Fatima. Thinking back it only seems like yesterday.
I hadn't seen Eddy for years however occasionally ran into someone who would always give an update on some high school friends. Most of my memories are from our school days and our weekends in Patrick's Cove. However one memory that still makes me laugh is from a weekend that Eddy came to Branch. He stayed with his Grandmother and Grandfather O'Rourke out the road. I can still see his face when he came to "The Corner" that night. He was getting ready to go out for the night and usually the last thing to do before leaving the house would be to brush your teeth. Well it wasn't such a pleasant experience for Eddy that evening because instead of reaching for the toothpaste he covered his toothbrush with his grandfather's brylcreem. He was still spitting when he got to the corner.
Eddy was a gentle soul, an old soul who will be sadly missed however never forgotten. He touched the lives of many and his spirit will live on through all the memories and stories shared by his friends and family.
To Eddy's family, may the peace that comes from the memories of love and stories shared comfort you now and in the days ahead. May you always feel his presence from his love of nature: in every drop of rain, every flake of snow, every gust of wind, every bank of fog and every ray of sunshine. Soar with the angels my high school friend. RIP

Stan,Delores and family..Sorry to hear of Eddy's sudden passing.Ive known him since Kindergarten however I havent seen him in years..Fortunately growing up in small communities provided the opportunity to share the best years of our lives together by having the same classmates every year.Although our life choices may inhibit our paths from crossing we all share a strong bond of memories. I remember in Gr.2 we had to hold a black rope on the way to the library so we wouldnt stray on the road. Eddy hated this rope because he was a free spirit and wanted to run about and explore or at least grab a blade of grass to chew on. He would opt to find a pothole full of water and jump in it getting all the girls wet.During our high school years he was quite the charmer and oh so charismatic. When he would ask you for a dance he would use a line such as "Would you like to have the honor of dancing with me" Secretly I thought he was shy and would use humor to disguise it.So then we would hit the dance floor and his long arms and legs would be flailing all over the place...it was a sight to behold...Whenever I pass through Ship Cove on my way home I always think...gosh I havent seen Eddy Tobin in years...I do have the memory however of seeing him as a young man on the turn going down Ship Cove hill with a setter or two by his side and a stick in his hand...I will hold on to this memory as Im sure you will treasure your memories of him as you grieve your great loss..Take care.. When you hear about the passing of an old friend, it gives you pause for thought. I never found out Eddy had passed away until yesterday evening and I just couldn't believe it. I spent all last night thinking about our school days, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and reliving some good old memories.
Unfortunately, I hadn't kept in touch with him through the years……….All the typical reasons- Life gets busy, you move to a different community, you have to work, etc………You all know the many reasons we grow apart, but distance and time does not erase memories.
Gladly, I did speak with him a few years ago and he told me about his beautiful daughter, Caroline, and how lucky he was to have her. He was very happy and proud to be her dad.
We chatted about all the good times the "crowd of us" had at George's and down around the docks when we were younger. We reminisced about all the mischievous things we all did back then, some of which I still wouldn't put on paper!!!! Eddy's take on it all was that it was harmless fun and made for good trips down memory lane…..a "rite of passage"! He was soooooo right!
Here's just a few fond memories of Eddy that I happened upon as I strolled down memory lane!
Eddy loved to have a chat! He was a very deep thinker and always had a philosophical point of view on life, politics, religion, and nature. He loved to read and would always recommend a favorite book……..Even when we were in Elementary school, we would compete to see who could read the Wizard of Oz books first and race to "Mary's" library shelves to get the next one!
I remember that he loved history and to know things about the world, which is why his favorite subjects back in the day were Social Studies, Newfoundland Culture, English and Geography. He loved to listen to Eleanor Young tell about the legends, ghost stories and old folktales of the Cape Shore and thought she was one of the best teachers ever! When it came to Math, he thought it was too black and white….you could only have one right answer. Eddy didn't think mathematically…..….Life was never black and white, no exact answers to anything………That was how he thought even in Grade 10! Pretty deep indeed and very insightful even at a young age!
Eddy was someone who got along with young and old alike. He'd enjoy chatting with George or Raymond just as much as with the young crowd and loved to learn about the old days, the history of the Shore, the country and so on. He showed them respect and was well liked and respected by all in return.
Eddy LOVED Ship Cove! He thought it was heaven on Earth and I can remember us all teasing him, telling him Patrick's Cove was much more scenic, had a nicer landwash/beach and so on. That's about the only time he would get really "riled" up! He would tell anybody within earshot that Ship Cove was the place where he planned to stay all his life. He remained true to his word and knowing Eddy, his spirit will live on there! I know every time I drive through there, I will think of him.
Eddy was also a generous person. If he had a cassette or a book you liked, you were more than welcome to it. If some of the young fellows banging around with him were broke and needed to borrow some money, he was always willing to help them out. Likewise, if he borrowed anything from you, you always got it back.
He was not the type to hold a grudge. When having "fun" on a Friday or Saturday, some of the guys might become a little argumentative. Eddy would take any disagreement or varying of opinions in stride and was more than willing to "socialize" with that person again the next day! I'm sure many of the young fellows from home that he hung around with can attest to this!
Eddy also liked to have a good time and I'm sure everybody has a story to tell of a good time had with him! I can remember one time when Eddy made some heads turn. He was driving a big car (Delta 88 I think……..Back then, those were the types of cars he loved!). He and Ches had been out all night- not working overtime or anything, but just not knowing when to end the good time! They had driven around the Shore many times, and Eddy was having trouble with the forward gear in his transmission. Eddy did not want to leave his car in St. Bride's, so he decided to drive back (literally!!) to Patrick's Cove in reverse!! There were some looks that Sunday morning by the churchgoers when he came down over the hill by Raymond's……… But as Eddy would say, "No harm done, good trips down memory lane!" He got quite a kick out of it and told the story more than once over the next few days!
I could go on and on about who Eddy was when we were younger, but sadly enough, I don't have any stories from his adult years because, for all the reasons mentioned above, we didn't keep in touch.
Knowing how firmly he held on to his love for Ship Cove, staying close to his parents and staying true to his belief in traditional living and love of nature, I would say he probably didn't change the core of who he truly was………
I am sure his spirit will live on in his daughter and that he will be forever missed by his friends, family and loved ones.
May you forever rest in peace.

Delores,Stan,Mark(Joelene)and Tim.So sorry to hear about your terrible loss. Eddy was a great friend. We spent many good times together and had plenty of laughs both at work and socializing. Delores and Stan ,his love of family was beyond words. His love of home was equally as important. I hope good memories carry you through this most difficult time. To Caroline, his beautiful daughter, may you continue to hold precious memories close at heart. I read a quote the other day that is on a tombstone in Ireland, and knowing how much Eddy loved the land and outdoors I thought of what he would say instantly. It read, " Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." I believe he would want us to follow this saying until we all meet again. Take care, Jennifer and Family.

Stan, Delores,Mark, Tim and Caroline, I was so shocked and saddened when I heard of Eddy's death. He was always kind and friendly and my mother thought the world of him. She would be so happy when Eddy would bring her over some fresh butter...it really meant a lot to her that a young fellow would be so thoughtful towards an elderly person. I was always happy, when I saw Eddy's Christmas lights and house lights on when driving home from St. John's. It gave me a welcome home feeling ...as there are so very few houses or people along the Cape Shore now.I knew I could depend on Eddy if I got stuck in the hill , as he was always around. Eddy was a big part of the life out home and he will be so dearly missed. Eddy RIP and thanks for your smiles and friendliness...you will be missed.

To Stan and Delores and Family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. God Bless all you. While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil. (by John Taylor) I am so, so sad to hear about my cousin Eddy Tobin ... peace and love to everyone - I know everyone is mourning because he was "everywhere" and "everyone" knew him. I landed in St. John's once a number of years ago and was on my way downtown in a rented vehicle when I heard someone behind me blow the horn. I stopped, thinking I did something wrong... and guess who it was - Eddy - large as life and we hugged on the street and had a chat and a laugh and away with us both in our own directions! And today I am so grateful that we had such little joyous encounters. And I can't even tell you how often in my travels someone would say: "So which of the Tobin's are you" and I would say: "We are the Tobin's that were originally from Ship Cove". And the response would be "Ahhh.. you must be Eddy's cousin! And I would say: Yes, and how do you know Eddy? And through all the answers I came to the ultimate conclusion that "Eddy knew god and the world" and "Everybody loved him". RIP, my friend. XXOO. I only wish that RIP meant Return If Possible. You will never be forgotten. Gailene Tobin, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
