Obituary of Dominic Anthony McGrath

It is with deep sadness, but heartfelt gratitude for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of Dominic Anthony McGrath who passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at St.Clare’s Mercy Hospital on July 21, 2026 at the age of 84. Predeceased by his beloved wife Elsie (2019); his parents, Genevieve and Ignatius McGrath; his parents-in-law Lucy and Charles Coffey; his brothers; Ignatius Jr., Kenneth (Margaret - deceased), Ambrose (Nellie - deceased), Cyril and Gilbert; his sister Bernadette (Alfred Cahill - deceased); sister-in-law Maureen and his son-in-law Paul Judge. A quiet and humble man, he found happiness in life's simple moments and never complained no matter what the circumstance. He enjoyed spending time with family, keeping up with current events, and faithfully cheering on his favourite sports teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. Dominic was a proud lifetime member of the Star of the Sea Association in Placentia. He cherished the friendships, fellowship, and sense of community that came with being part of the organization, and it remained a meaningful part of his life. He lived a life defined by hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. A dedicated construction worker throughout his life, he believed in doing every job well and took great pride in his work. His career took him to many communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, but no matter where the job was, he always looked forward to returning home to Patrick's Cove to be with his family and friends. He loved his family wholeheartedly and cherished every opportunity to be with them. His gentle nature, quiet strength and kind heart will be remembered with love always. Above all, Dominic's family was his greatest pride and joy. Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Jackie (Frank), Joyce, Denise (Dion), Dominic (Terri-Lynn), and Diane (Ryan). He was a proud grandfather to Katie (Shane), Jennifer (Jonathan), Adam, Michael, Victoria, Zachary, Hailey, Logan and proud great-grandfather to Timothy, Henry and Charley. Following the passing of his wife, Elsie, he left Patrick's Cove and moved to Holyrood, where he made his home with his daughter Denise and son-in-law Dion. This new chapter brought him the ability to be closer to family and friends, something he treasured deeply. He enjoyed the comfort of a loving home, the joy of familiar faces, and the many little moments that brought him happiness each day. He was grateful for the care, kindness, and companionship that surrounded him during these years. He shared an especially close bond with his grandson Zachary. Teaching Zachary how to play crib was one of Grandpa’s greatest joys, they spent countless hours playing crib, telling jokes, looking for "Corky" in the Downhomer, and talking about sports. Those simple moments together became treasured memories for them both. In the last few years the arrival of his great-grandsons Timothy, Henry, and Charley Burt also brightened his days with their visits to Holyrood and FaceTime calls. Watching the ‘little boys’ laughing, playing and having fun always made him smile. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his family, and he treasured every moment they shared. Also leaving to mourn with fond memories are his brothers and sisters whose visits and phone calls he always enjoyed; Wilhelmina (John), Vera (Jerome), Genevieve (Vivian), Joseph (Jackie), Reggie (Jane), Benedict (Darlene), Calvin, and Brendan; his sisters-in-law Sheila, Liz and Betty McGrath as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, including members of the Coffey family; and his special friends, Keith Careen, Howie McGrath, Ted and Marie Walsh, all of whom will miss him dearly. The family extends their sincere gratitude to caregivers Rosemary, Gina and Marlene as well as Dr. Sean Connors and Dr. Paul Walsh and Nurse Megan on 6 West St. Clare’s for their exceptional care, compassion and support. Visitation will be at Coombs Funeral Home, Placentia on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 1:00pm - 7:00pm. Funeral Service to be held at Coombs Memorial Chapel on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 11:00 am. Interment to follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Patrick’s Cove. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke foundation or Diabetes Canada. It’s not goodbye, it's simply - ‘see ya again’
