Sergeant Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Fox (née Sharpe), MMM, CD
June 20, 1949 – May 18, 2026
Sergeant Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Fox (née Sharpe), born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on June 20, 1949, passed peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Health Science Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, with family by her side and surrounded by the love of family and friends near and far.
Predeceased by her parents, William and Jean Sharpe, and her brother Arthur Sharpe.
Betty leaves to mourn her daughter, Sharon Fox, and her granddaughter, Sarah Fox of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She also leaves behind her sisters Darlene (Richard) Coffey of Angel’s Cove, Phyllis (Wayne) Bell of Amherst, NS, and Dorothy (David) Patriquin of Amherst, NS; nephews William (Gina), Roger (Keri), Ryan, Justin (Jenn), and Blake; nieces Amanda (Corey) and special niece Lindsay; and great-nieces and nephews Reese, Nash, Rory, Molly, and Bryce.
Betty’s friendships were many and meaningful, and while it is impossible to list everyone, her family is deeply grateful to all who shared her life. Special mention is made of her “church ladies,” her “swimming buddies,” and her “kids” of Burry Heights.
Betty proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. In recognition of her distinguished service and leadership, she was awarded the Member of the Order of Military Merit (MMM) and the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD). After her retirement, she returned to Nova Scotia and later lived in Ontario for a few years. When she visited Newfoundland, she fell in love with the province and the peaceful, close-knit community of Angel’s Cove, making it her permanent home.
Any project or task Betty undertook, she did wholeheartedly. She was fully committed and always did everything in her power to help others. Betty embodied the saying, “sprinkle kindness everywhere you go,” living it every day through acts of compassion, generosity, and support—always offered without expectation of recognition or reward.
A strong and faithful member of the United Church, Betty’s deep spirituality guided her in all aspects of life. She was passionate about supporting the younger generations, celebrating their successes, and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Her charitable nature touched countless lives, leaving a lasting legacy of love, service, and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Betty’s memory. Her warmth, dedication, and boundless compassion will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
“And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun, And hold you in the palm of His Hand.”
