Obituary of Spencer F. Hancock

Please share a memory of Spencer to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Spencer Hancock, August 2, 1944 - February 22, 2026 After a brief diagnosis and brave battle with cancer, we lost our most lovable, beautiful, honest, respected, best friend, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Spencer was born with angel wings, they just got a little stronger that day. Spencer was predeceased by his wife Ivy, on November 29th, 2024 but, leaves behind with the biggest heartache; sons, Shaun, Jeff, "daughter" Julie; three grandchildren, Coady, Ethan (Hunter) and Jordana (mother Debbie). Two great brothers; Jim (Doris), Rob (Donna) and his one and only, “favourite” sister, Sandra (Brian); Nephews, Jeremy & Adam along with nieces, Amanda & Heather and the Hancock and Stuckey cousins. Extended family members; sister-in-law, Lorraine Warren and her two children; brother-in-law, Ivy's twin, Gene (Leah) and their five children. Nephew, Gene (Tonya) Upshall and Gene's four children; and Ivy's very special niece, Shirley (Greg) Belleau. Spencer's career as a mechanic brought him to work at the Argentia Naval Base and across Canada. But, his home was in Dunville, where he retired as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic from the City of St.John's. Retirement never slowed him down. His garage door was always up and while he was tinkering at something, he had many friends stop by to say hello, bring a meal, have a beer, a chat or offer help or advice on a vehicle they were working on. He loved it! If you were lucky to know Spencer, you loved him. If he knew you, you were befriended by him. His mannerisms are what drew you in and kept you coming back. He was a friend to many, and many were great friends back to him. Thank you to special friends, Tommy Barron, Lester Power, Kevin O'Toole, Stan Short, Dick Quilty, Joe and Bernice Newman, Ron & Margie Ryan, Dominic & Doreen Traverse, Bernard Penney, Bernard Griffiths, the Cochrane families and the Hickey Families; as well as Spencer's youngest friend, Wylie O'Keefe. Our family appreciates and thanks you for everything you have done with and for Spencer over many years. There are so many friends to list but, please know that we know who you are. Thank you for being his friend. Spencer never looked for praise, he was never one to boast. He just went on quietly working, for the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, his wants were very few. And most of the time his worries went unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation, through all our storms of life. A sturdy hand to hold on to, in times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to, when times were good and bad. One of our greatest blessings, the man that we call Dad. Thank you to Dr. Power and Staff at the Placentia Health Care Centre. The HSC Radiology Oncology team, Dr. Thompkins & Dr. MacManaman. To the absolute best, the staff at Agnes Pratt, THANK YOU! The love and care you gave Spencer from the minute he came through the doors will never be forgotten. We are sending our deepest heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to you all. Thank you to IMPACT SIGNS, Mount Pearl for their graphics, prints & professionalism in making our vision a reality.
