Raymond (Ray) Gerard Paul Murphy
September 23, 1945 – November 2, 2025
After a life filled with love, laughter, and service, Ray Murphy, aged 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on November 2, 2025, at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, St. John's.
Ray was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Alicia Murphy, and siblings Ella, Francis, and Flora Brophy. He was also predeceased by his parents-in-law, Julia and Vincent Baker; and in-laws Leonard Baker, Edward Baker, Sister Mary Baker, RSM; Bride and Hughie Mitchell, Tom Baker, and Bridget Baker.
Above all, family was Ray’s greatest joy. He shared 56 wonderful years with his wife and best friend, Alice. Together they raised four children: Paul (Tracey), Sean (Beverly), Raelene (Brett Clark), and Vince. His nine grandchildren — Ella, Evan, Alexander, Ben, Ava, Hailey, Matthew, Caleb, and Jonah — were his pride and joy. He loved catching up with them and sharing all their milestones and adventures.
He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Russ Murphy (Marg), Emlene Murphy (Mac), Mike Murphy (Marcella), Elaine (John Siemens), Frank Murphy (Linda), and Harold Murphy (Rosemarie), as well as by his in-laws Kevin Baker, Jim Baker (Theresa), Patricia (John Norman), Vince Baker (Dorothy), Judy (Bob Drake), Carol Baker, Orion Baker, and Gerald Brophy, along with their families, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Born in Dunville, Ray was a proud Newfoundlander whose life was grounded in service, family, and community. A dedicated teacher by profession, he inspired countless students with his passion for learning, shared a few good stories and jokes, and through his actions and words encouraged others to enjoy all that life has to offer.
Ray served as the Mayor of the Town of Dunville from 1990–1994, where his leadership and vision helped shape the community he loved. He was a founding member of the East Coast Argentia Kinsmen Club and a lifetime member of the Kinsmen Club of Canada. He was committed to service and helping others and cherished the fellowship and lifelong friendships it brought. He continued to be an active political advocate for his community up until his final days.
Deeply connected to Newfoundland culture, Ray loved exploring and traveling throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. He was an avid storyteller who loved a good song and a lively gathering, and was especially known for closing out get-togethers with his spirited rendition of “The Pup.” When not sharing stories or laughter, he found joy in gardening and landscaping, creating beautiful spaces that reflected his care and creativity.
A large circle of extended family, dear friends, and community members held a special place in his heart and remember him with love. He will be remembered as a passionate advocate and a loving, devoted family man whose kindness, humour, and generosity enriched the lives of all who knew him.
