Obituary of Joseph Pitcher
Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The family of Joseph Pitcher, aged 74, are deeply saddened by his passing on October 15, 2025 at Carbonear General Hospital. Joe passed away in the loving presence of his wife Judy and granddaughter Cassandra.
Joe is survived and greatly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Judy (nee Tiller), and their children, Joshua (Chantelle) and Justine (Jamie). Forever cherished and remembered by their grandchildren, Cassandra (Nick), Britney (Devon), Davidson, Tyler, Callum, and Zerrick; his mother Mary and siblings and their families; Bill, Gerry (Bertha), Carl (Marina), Ron (Sherry), Gordon, Sheila (Paul), and Jack (Louise); sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Brian), Mary, and Anne; as well as his brother-in-law, Sam (Emma). His memory lives on with his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended families, and many lifelong friends.
Joe is predeceased by his father Ronald, his father-in-law, Samuel Tiller and mother-in-law, Phyllis Tiller.
Joe grew up on Merasheen Island until age 16 when resettlement forced his family’s move to Southeast, Placentia. He always loved going back “home”. Dubbed the “headlayder” by his grandfather Joey, Joe was in his glee exploring the hills and coves with his buddies as a teenager and enjoyed it just as much in his later years.
After graduating from Laval High School, Joe had a stint with the RCAF before moving to a long career with IOC in Labrador City. It was there he met and married Judy and raised his family.
In the Big Land, he loved the wide open spaces for hunting, fishing and trapping and also worked at search and rescue as a diver. On retirement, Joe and Judy moved to Dunville but refused to really retire with his millwright skills still high in demand.
He continued to enjoy the outdoors with hunting, fishing, and boating high on his priority list, and he loved to be at the cabin.
Anyone that knew Joe encountered his warped sense of humour, his ability to stir the pot, and heard a thousand stories that very often stretched the truth. One of a kind, ready to give you the shirt off his back if you needed and always there to lend a hand. We all miss you dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Coombs Funeral Home, Placentia. Visitation to take place at Coombs Funeral Home on Saturday, October 18th from 2-4 p.m., immediately followed by a Celebration of Joe’s Life in Coombs Memorial Chapel.
